Jason Bourne confronts a frightening enemy in The Bourne Sacrifice, the latest in the series created by Robert Ludlum and the third Bourne novel written by Brian Freeman.

Apparently, it appears that Bourne is never going to learn the secrets of his past. In this episode, he reunites with Canadian journalist Abbey Laurent, who plays a key part in this fast-moving thriller. He had left her behind two years earlier because he’s worried about her safety as she will never be saved with him or around him. For her part, she is known in her profession as a persistent person who will not give up on a lead until she finds out the truth.

The story starts off with a woman travelling from Germany to Washington, DC under the name “Deborah Mueller” who knew she was taking a serious risk on this mission. She was set to meet with someone in the shadow of the Washington Monument but instead was killed by a dark and dangerous stranger who was whistling the Beatles tune, I Should Have Known Better.

This killing near the Potomac raises Abbey’s interest. Apparently, the killing was sanctioned by the Pyramid, a secretive organisation that ostensibly fights lies and misinformation around the world but does so with lies of its own. When Abbey asks too many questions about the murder, the organisation fights back by planting false stories about her on social media to ruin her reputation and career. Worse, the Pyramid wants her dead, too.

Meanwhile, in Iceland, Bourne silently awaits his prey - an evil target named Lennon who enjoys sharing a surname with the late Beatle and he even has an evil girlfriend named Yoko. Hero and villain had met several times in the past, each missing or simply passing up chances to kill the other, apparently because they'd rather talk than pull the trigger. As fans know, Bourne has lost all memory of his life before being shot in the head. The CIA doesn’t want him to learn of his past, which is the mystery that drives the series. Lennon supposedly knows all about the parts of Bourne’s past that he forgot and holds that over him. Bourne's plan is to capture Lennon and torture that information out of him before killing him.

But Treadstone also wants Lennon alive, and Bourne’s old boss, Nash Rollins, has agreed to provide Bourne with whatever support he needs to capture the assassin. Bourne then meets Kenna Martin, a young woman who works for the publicity firm The Forster Group. Once Bourne introduces himself to her in his subtle way and gets her to open up, he finds out that her company works with organisations like the Varak Foundation and 4Bear, a Russian software giant. Both might be tied to Lennon. Bourne then speaks to her boss, Darrell Forster who happens to chair the Varak Foundation. The pieces of the puzzle are slowly starting to come together.

The book is like a spider’s web in which each character and new plotline seem to intertwine with one another, making it a true, intelligent espionage novel.

Meanwhile, Bourne is a loner by necessity, because “nothing gets you killed faster than trust”. There are odd coincidences, such as Bourne and Abbey meeting again and the hero and the bad guy meeting again and again. Can Abbey Laurent get her life back? Or even survive this time around? And if she survives, will she and Jason Bourne get back together again?

The Bourne Sacrifice is everything you have come to expect from a Bourne novel, and more, as one of the most complex characters in modern-day thrillers continues to amaze and delight fans. Colourful characters and solid plotting continue to make this book an exciting journey and a pleasure to read.
