The book opens in December 1903, where travelling by night under the cover of darkness, Alexander Graham Bell led a team of scientists to Geno, Italy for a top secret mission. There, they searched for the remains of James Smithson, the founder of the Smithsonian Institute. After weeks of going about obtaining Smithson’s remains the right and legal way, they encountered problems with the Italian government who repeatedly shut down their efforts. Then the group decided to act on their own.

Back in the present day, Commander Grayson Pierce is enjoying some much-needed vacation time on a remote sandy beach off the island of Maui. Gray, one of the top operators for Sigma Force, a covert group tied to DARPA, has spent time travelling the world with Seichan, his girlfriend. Together, they witnessed a bizarre event when a small plane dumped a black cloud above the water before them, and then flew into the cliffs in a fiery explosion. The black cloud turns out to be a swarm of three-inch long, poisonous black wasps.

With their holidays over, Gray and Seichan contacted Painter Crowe, director of Sigma Force, to fill him in on what they saw. Upon hearing that similar incidents had been reported on Oahu and the big island of Hawaii, it becomes obvious that the wasp attacks were a coordinated biological assault.

Meanwhile, off the coast of Brazil, a team of scientists discovers a horror like no other, an island where all life has been eradicated, consumed and possessed by a species beyond imagination.

Before they can report their discovery, a mysterious agency attacks the group, killing them all, save one, an entomologist, who is an expert on venomous creatures, Professor Ken Matsui from Cornell University.

Amidst all the mysterious happenings, this inexplicable threat traces back to a terrifying secret buried a century ago beneath the National Mall: a cache of bones preserved in amber. The artefact was hidden away by a cabal of scientists - led by Alexander Graham Bell - to protect humankind. But they dared not destroy it, for the object also holds an astonishing promise for the future - the very secret of life after death.

Yet, nothing stays buried forever. An ancient horror - dormant in the marrow of those preserved bones - is free once more, nursed and developed into a weapon of immense strength and malignancy, used to wreak havoc on an unsuspecting world by one Japanese man bent on seeking revenge.

To stop its spread, Gray and Seichan must both first survive a direct attack on the island of Maui. Being first on the scene has always been the core mission of Sigma Force. But this time, even Sigma may not be able to decipher this deadly mystery, one that traces back to the founding of the Smithsonian Institution.

With each new discovery, the menace they hunt is changing, growing, spreading - adapting and surviving every attempt to stop the colony of wasps from reconquering a world they once ruled. And each transformation makes the insects stronger and also smarter.

With time and options running out, Gray and his team of Sigma Force will be forced to make an impossible choice. To eradicate this extinction-level threat and expose those involved, he will have to join forces with Sigma’s arch enemy, the newly resurrected Guild, even if it means sacrificing one of his own.

Will Seichan, who has been infected by the larva of the wasps, survive the attack? And will the Sigma team succeed in saving the residents of Hawaii island from the deadly wasps?

James Rollins takes the thriller to a whole new level with The Demon Crown, which features a chilling plot, lots of suspenseful action, and several well-timed twists to keep readers glued to the pages.

The early attack scenes are both terrifying and intense and they set the tone and feel for the book. Each chapter unfolds with a sense of urgency and purpose, creating a relentless pace that never lets up till the end.
