In this last novel, Michelle is recovering from a close encounter with death in the previous assignment, and Sean is looking after her like an old and trusted husband.
Meanwhile, the action is happening somewhere else in Afghanistan where Sam Wingo is on the way to deliver a safely guarded cargo only to be ambushed by a group of ‘CIA’ employees whose aim is to steal the cargo from Sam and make him disappear forever.
Sam manages to escape death but he has to leave the cargo behind. From here on starts a dangerous cat and mouse game between those who want to find Sam and him trying to prove his innocence.
After a chance encounter between Sam’s son, Tyler and Sean/Michelle one rainy night on the road, Tyler hires them to look into the disappearance of his father. He doesn’t really believe Sam is dead, not after receiving an email from him after the date he supposedly ‘died’.
There is a lot of action and suspense in this book. Especially when Sean and Maxwell survive a bombing attempt, thanks to Sean’s quick thinking and action.
There are plenty of light moments in the book, too, especially when it comes to Edgar, a savant who takes everything literally, and who is helping out the duo track important details in the cyberworld.
Lastly, the agents from the various offices such as FBI, CIA, DIA, and even the president are shown here as real humans with all their flaws and their humanity.
As for the bad guys, the main villain is depicted more like a deranged person with a vengeful mission. Eventually, as always, the good triumphs over the evil and both Sean and Michelle live to fight another day or mission.
